Dr. Derek Cheng is a board-certified and fellowship-trained neurologist specializing in the accurate diagnosis and treatment of patients with complex epilepsy or new-onset seizure disorders. Dr. Cheng completed a B.A. in English and pre-medical studies at the University of Michigan, followed by a Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology at Columbia University. He obtained a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from The New York College of Osteopathic Medicine-NYIT and subsequently completed neurology residency training at North Shore University Hospital and Long Island Jewish Medical Center (Northwell Health) where he served as Chief Resident his final year. Dr. Cheng then completed advanced fellowship training in neurophysiology with a focus on electroencephalogram (EEG) and epilepsy at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center/Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. His advanced training offers hope to patients with new-onset seizures, or patients unable to manage their epilepsy. Treatment begins with a comprehensive and personalized evaluation. Dr. Cheng treats patients using the latest medical therapies including medication and anti-seizure devices such as vagus nerve stimulator or the responsive neurostimulator. He also works as a member of a coordinated team when a patient is a candidate for epilepsy surgery. Dr. Cheng understands the emotional aspect an epilepsy diagnosis can place on a patient and family. He is passionate about patient-centered care and provides compassionate, individualized care focusing on the quality of life for each patient.
