I love psychiatry because it is the perfect combination of neurobiological and psychosocial sciences. Psychiatry is, in my view, one of the broadest specialties in modern medicine, because we have to treat the whole person, not just their brains; we have to think about them not only as biological entities but also ones with minds, feelings, values and relationships, who live in a wider society. In psychiatry people talk about their most personal experiences and feelings which they do not feel comfortable talking to other professionals. It is this trust and value which they place on us, I want to sustain with utmost respect. Remember psychiatric illness is not a sham or a crime and should not be stigmatized nor should people be embarrassed about it. They are biological disorders just as other countless medical illness like diabetes or hypertension and they need treatment. I am providing scientific evidence based treatment for various psychiatric disorders, educating my patients about their problems and also learning from them in the process. I find it fulfilling and satisfying when I see I was of help to the patients and their families I care for.
