Haiwen Chen is a pediatric neurologist who specializes in caring for children with pediatric onset neuroinflammatory and neuroinfectious diseases, including myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody-associated disease, neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder, multiple sclerosis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis, optic neuritis, encephalitis and myelitis. After earning medical and postdoctoral degrees from the University of Maryland School of Medicine, Dr. Chen completed an internship and residency in pediatrics at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she remained and completed a pediatric neurology residency. Dr. Chen’s postdoctoral research studied synaptic structure and function using molecular biology and microscopy techniques. Her current research focuses on understanding the synaptic and immune mechanisms underlying the development of neuroimmune diseases, with the goal of identifying novel biomarkers for disease and potential targets for therapeutics.
