General Description

Joseph V. Sakran, MD, MPH, MPA, FACS is Executive Vice Chair of Surgery and Director of Clinical Operations at Johns Hopkins Medicine, a trauma surgeon, public health leader, and member of the National Academy of Medicine. He is internationally recognized for translating clinical evidence into public policy, systems innovation, and large-scale social change. A survivor of gun violence, Dr. Sakran has become one of the nation's leading physician advocates for firearm injury prevention. His work has helped elevate firearm injury as a public health issue and contributed to national policy efforts, including the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. He currently serves as Board Chair and Chief Medical Officer of Brady United Against Gun Violence and chairs the Advocacy and Health Policy Program Area of the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. Beyond firearm injury prevention, Dr. Sakran's work focuses on redesigning healthcare systems to prevent disease before it occurs. He is a senior co-investigator on a national clinical trial evaluating opportunistic salpingectomy in general surgery and helps lead OutSmart Ovarian Cancer, a multidisciplinary initiative working to make ovarian cancer prevention a routine component of surgical care through clinical research, physician education, health policy, and public engagement. His academic work spans trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, health policy, artificial intelligence, implementation science, and healthcare delivery. He has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed publications and has been recognized with numerous national honors, including election to the National Academy of Medicine, the Johns Hopkins President's Frontier Award, the Robert Wood Johnson Health Policy Fellowship, and designation as a Presidential Leadership Scholar. Dr. Sakran earned his medical degree from the Medical School for International Health at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in collaboration with Columbia University, a Master of Public Health from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, a Master in Public Administration from the Harvard Kennedy School, and is completing his MBA at the NYU Stern School of Business. He is a sought-after keynote speaker whose work explores the intersection of medicine, leadership, public policy, technology, and the systems required to build healthier, more resilient communities.
