He holds a leadership position as Director of Service for the Burn Unit at Staten Island University Hospital, where he oversees the care of critically ill patients and directs trauma services related to burns.Dr. Cooper completed his Doctor of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. He further honed his surgical skills through residencies in General Surgery at the University of Hawaii and St. Vincent's Hospital & Medical Center. His specialized training continued with fellowships at New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell, focusing on Burns and Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.With a strong commitment to advancing the field, Dr. Cooper's areas of focus include adult and pediatric acute burn treatment and burn surgery, as well as reconstructive burn surgery, including CO2 laser surgery for burn scar keloids. He also expertly manages the surgical treatment and reconstruction of complex wounds such as necrotizing fasciitis, massive lymphedema, and hidradinitis.Dr. Cooper is an active participant in burn research, investigating critical topics such as scald burns in African American women and children associated with hair braids, limb salvage in patients with uncontrolled diabetes and necrotizing fasciitis, the reconstruction of traumatic foot wounds with exposed tendons, and reconstruction of massive lower extremity lymphedema post debulking. He has presented his research findings at numerous prestigious conferences, including the Bostwick Burn and Wound Conference, the American Burn Association Annual Meeting, and the Northeast Regional Burn Conference. His current research interests extend to the societal impact of burn imagery on survivors' recovery and reintegration.An Assistant Professor at the Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell, Dr. Cooper is dedicated to educating the next generation of medical professionals. He sees patients at various Northwell Health locations, including the Staten Island University Hospital North Burn Unit, Burn Outpatient clinics in Staten Island and Brooklyn.
