Early in his career, Nick served as an Assistant District Attorney in the Dane County (Madison, Wisconsin) District Attorney’s Office and an Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Illinois Attorney General. In Illinois, he served as a member of the Statewide Grand Jury Bureau, prosecuting complex, multi-county gun, drug and gang cases. In Dane County, Nick specialized in sensitive crimes, prosecuting domestic violence, stalking, child abuse, sexual assault of adults and children, and homicide. His extensive experience as a prosecutor gives him an edge as a defense attorney; he can anticipate the strategies and arguments the prosecution will employ, and his defensive strategies are comprehensive and targeted. Since 2013, Nick has advocated tirelessly on behalf of people accused of crimes. He has been awarded both the Dane County Warrior of the Year and the Martin Hansen Award by securing an acquittal for a client accused of intentional homicide. While he is versed in a variety of complex cases, Nick has become known in Wisconsin for his work with clients that suffer from severe mental health conditions and intellectual disability. He has perhaps tried more not-guilty-by-reason-of-mental-disease-or-defect (“NGI” or “NGRI”) cases to juries than any other lawyer in Wisconsin. Nick has also become well-known for his expertise working with, directing, and crossing expert witnesses, especially medical and mental health experts. He has deep knowledge and expertise working with clients with serious mental health concerns, intellectual, cognitive and neurological impairments and disabilities, as well as significant substance abuse histories. Making use of his expertise in cases involving intellectual disability, Nick has developed a unique skill set in litigating – and winning – the issue of competency for clients with intellectual, developmental, and cognitive disabilities in cases involving serious sexual assault charges. In addition to his work in complex homicide, sexual assault, and other violent conflict crimes, Nick has represented many adolescent clients in expulsion and disciplinary matters in schools across Wisconsin, as well as young-adult clients in non-academic misconduct disciplinary matters and Title IX cases at University of Wisconsin – Madison and other area colleges.
